How many A4 pages did you write for your mermaids curse books because i have wrote a book and don't know if its long enough is 46 A4 pages enough? (size 20 writeing if it helps)

  2. Sorry about the delay in replying (and I'm delighted to know that you enjoyed the Mermaid Curse series).

I wrote about 80 A4 pages for each Mermaid book. But a lot depends on what type size you use (I use 11) and whether you set your line spacing to single or double (I use double, which is what publishers need). It's better to count the number of words, rather than the number of pages. Have you got a word-count tool on your computer? If you have, see what figure that comes up with. My word-count for Mermaids is about 25,000. But don't worry if that sounds horrendous - if you've got somewhere around 15,000 words, that should be fine. And well done you!

    All the best,

    Louise

Hi louise, i need your help too ;) I have read all the Mermaid Curse books and enjoyed them very much but...there is one thing i got confused about...When does Lizzy start to understand what Arhans is saying?

  4. Hi, Shannon, and apologies for the delay in replying. I've been away - more of that on the Journal page soon!

Thinking about your question, do you know, I'm not entirely sure myself. I think Lizzy's understanding begins naturally, when she realises that she's half mermaid and can live under the sea. The ability to understand dolphins and other sea creatures is part of her natural inheritance from Morvyr - but because she grew up on land, of course she never learned how to talk with Arhans and the others, the way Kes did. So it's as if she has to learn a new language, like you and I might learn (for instance) French. By the end of the last story she's still not "word perfect", so to speak, but she's learned a lot.

    Hope that helps!

It is ok. I don't mind the delay. If you are busy i understand that.

Thanks for answering me. i learn french in school. :) so it was a good example. haha, anyway i would love to talk to dolphins. i actually kind of understand them. i went to deep sea world and had the offer to swim with a dolphin so i went in the pool (which was FREEZING COLD!) and it started..."talking to me" like squeaking. making those dolphin noises. and i actually thought it was saying 'Come and play with me'. im serious

Your well lucky! i would do anything to swim with them, they are my favourite animal, and along with others i would love to believe there is something out there in the sea..
But NOT Tullor or Taran! :L you would'nt want to meet them on a dark sea dive! :D
But also like others i would like to ask a question. Well, its not a question directly on the book, but, on the main home page there is a picture of the sea and a distance light house on the cliffs, is that the light house You discribe in the story that Lizzy hides beinds often to meet Kes and the dolphins? if it is, its a long, steep drop off the edge to the sea! i hope you can reply soon and id love to speak again soon to, for i am coming on Holiday in October to Cornwall! bye!
P.s, where in Cornwall is the Beach set? well, i mean the Beach Lizzy always goes to in the Story, wheres that to? Bye!! x

  9. Hi, Hollie, and thanks for your messages - and the compliments about Mermaid Curse. I'd LOVE to write more about Lizzie and her friends, but I don't know if Puffin would be up for it. If they're not, maybe I'll write a new story anyway, and post it on the website!

You asked about the lighthouse in the picture on the Journal page Do you mean the main picture at the top? If you do, then... it's not a lighthouse! The pic. was taken in winter at the beach near my home, which is on the north coast of COrnwall (Mermaid Curse is set on the south coast), and the thing that looks like a lighthouse is in fact the chimney of a ruined tin-mine engine house, called (I think) Wheal Charlotte.

I have to admit that I cheated a bit with the lighthouse in the story, as it isn't a real place but a mixture of several! It looks very much like the one on St. Anthony's Head, near Falmouth (there's a pic of that in my journal entry about the Tall Ships festival last year) but I moved it to the area around Newlyn, which is close to Penzance. If, when you come down, you get the chance to visit Newlyn, you'll see some of the places I "borrowed" for the story, such as the lifeboat station and the fishing harbour. The beach is a mixture of the beaches at Newlyn, Mousehole and Falmouth. So there's quite a lot of Author's Licence in there! But I hope I've caught the spirit of Cornwall, even if I've stretched reality just a little bit... :-)

    All the best,

    Louise

Thanks Louise, its helped and i think its a good idea that you have mixed all of Cornwall together :) And now im DEFINETLY going to ask mum if we can visit Newlyn, hehe! im still not to sure where we are going, but i think the name of the place begins with M... not that that would help much, hehe :) i have been to Loo before though i do know that. Anyway, thankyou so much for replying and i really hope Puffin do let you, Good bye!!! ;]

  11. Hmm... Lots of possibilities beginning with M! Could be Mousehole? Pronounced almost like 'Muzzle'. Or Mawnan Smith? Or Mabe? I could list more... :-)Post another message when you know exactly where you'll be! And I hope you have lovely weather for your holiday. July was awful here, and August not much better, so with any luck it will improve. Surely there's only SO much rain that can fall? :-))
