    Dear Louise,
First we want to wish you a very Happy New Year!
We are a group of French pupils. We're 13. Our school is called Collège Jean 23 and it is in Mulhouse, a town near the Swiss and German borders.
We've just read Emergency Landing. Some of us are not too keen on science fiction but we all liked your story, especially the twist at the end. We were so surprised to discover that the passengers were extraterrestrials.
We would like to know what happened after the landing because obvuiously they didn't blow up the Earth!
Do you have other stories that are not too long and not too difficult to understand?
    Best wishes

  2. Bonjour - et Bonne Annee!

My French isn't as good as your excellent English, I'm afraid, so I'd better switch to English now... :-)

I'm delighted that you enjoyed Emergency Landing, but you've made me think, because - to be honest - I didn't decide what would happen after the landing! As you say, of course they didn't blow up the Earth. So what did happen...? One idea I've thought of is that, perhaps, the alien ship is extremely small. So they land, make their repairs, set their bomb and take off again. The bomb explodes... but with no more power than a small firework!

Do you have any other ideas of what might happen? If so, I'd love to hear them!

Yes, I have a lot more very short stories similar to Emergency Landing - two books of them, in fact! The titles are "Short and Scary" and "Short and Spooky", and they are published in the UK by Oxford University Press. If your class, or your teachers, would like to get copies, you should be able to order them by giving the ISBN number (a unique number that enables them to be tracked by a bookseller). The numbers are:

Short and Scary! - ISBN 0-19-278190-1
Short and Spooky! - ISBN 0-19-275412-2

    I hope that helps!

And (of course, authors can't resist giving themselves a promotion whenever they can!) I have a number of books published in French. There's a series of supernatural animal stories, titles, "Creatures", published by Editions J'ai Lu, two fantasy trilogies, "Le Maitre du Temps" and "La Porte du Chaos", published by Bragelonne, and a separate fantasy novel, "Notre Reine des Neiges", published by Nestiveqnen. If you have a chance to read any of them I hope you will enjoy them too!

I'm going to the "Trolls et Legendes" fantasy festival in Mons (Belgie) in April - I'm very excited about that!

Thank you very much for writing to me - and let me know about those ideas!

    A bientot,

    Louise

    Dear Louise,
Thank you very much for your answer and the information about your books.
Yes, we have some ideas about what happened after the landing!

Loic and William think that they landed in the Pacific and that white sharks ate them all. There were no survivors... According to Céline, they landed on the island of Komodo and the dragons ate all the passengers. In Chahrazade's version, they landed in the Austarlian desert, near Ayer's rock and the Aborigenes helped them to repair the engine. Alexandre and Maxime think they met friendly people on an island and decided to stay.

    A bientôt,

  4. Hello again,

I like ALL those endings! If the ship lands in the Pacific or on Komodo, and the passengers are all eaten... well, that's justice for their attitude! :-) On the other hand, to have them helped at Ayers Rock, or to meet friendly people on an island, is great too, as they will become peaceable and pleasant as a result.

I think I should start posting some stories here, with the endings left open so that you, and maybe others, can decide on the conclusion!

    Best wishes,

    Louise

    Dear Louise,

    - Elise:
Thank you for your replies. It is very kind to answer our messages.
    - Johanna:
Your messages are very nice. I'm happy to be in touch with a writer.
    - Morgane:
To my mind, the best ending is the one on the island of Komodo because the dragons really exist!!
    - Coralie:
I love reading and I've started to write fantastic stories: it is very difficult! I'm writing a story about a witch. It takes place in the past but I don't know how it will end. Could you give me some advice?
    - William and Loic:
We think it's a great idea to ask the readers to imagine the end of your stories
because lots of people imagine different things, we haven't got the same imagination.
There will be good ends and bad ends.
    - Céline and Laura:
Your two fantasy trilogies look really interesting. We hope you'll like the festival in Mons and have a great time there.
    - Quentin:
I wish you good luck with your next books!

We can't wait to read your next message!
    All the best,

  6. Merci, tout! I'm very glad to think that I might have inspired you. Coralie, I'll be happy to help with your witch story if I can. Endings are the hardest part of writing a story, I think; I always have trouble with them. One good piece of advice is to decide how you want all the main characters to be at the very end - alive or dead, happy or sad, winning or losing. Then you can try thinking backwards from the end, to work out how they reach that conclusion.

Hope that helps - and thank you all for the kind things you've said.

    Very best wishes,

    Louise
